En sus patas frontales, el cabello es tan lanoso, grueso y largo que tiene su propio nombre: pantal\u00f3n. A menudo los bisontes se revuelcan en la tierra y agitan sus patas, creando una enorme nube de polvo. Este comportamiento, el revolcarse, les ayuda a deshacerse de la cubierta de cabello que han acumulado en el invierno, aliviar la irritaci\u00f3n de piel, evitar insectos que los pican, marcar su rastro y refrescarse en los meses de verano. Porque los bisontes son tan grandes, la perturbaci\u00f3n y compactaci\u00f3n que producen al revolcarse en la tierra crea charcos que luego pueden contener agua y crear un h\u00e1bitat para plantas que necesitan condiciones h\u00famedas para crecer. Los bisontes vuelven a usar los mismos lugares para revolcarse y algunas veces varios bisontes se revuelcan juntos.
